Image File Formats
Raster (Bitmap)
- Raster images are graphics that use pixels (bitmap) and are typically used in photography.
- There are many different raster file formats like jpg (jpeg), png, psd, heic, tiff, raw, bmp, and gif.
- jpg stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. This a way to compress images into a smaller size for them to be shared.
- png stands for Portable Network Graphic. This type of file that is lossless and is most often used for web graphics.
- psd stands for Photoshop Document. This is the file type that results from exporting image files from photoshop and is used for creating and editing images.
- heic stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is an older file format that compresses images more efficiently.
- tiff stands for Tagged Image File Format. It is a file format used to store raster files that preserves the quality of images.
- Camera Raw are uncompressed and unedited images that could be edited.
- bmp stands for Bitmap Image File. It is a format that stores images with many colors.
- gif stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It is a format that supports basic animation and displays animation.
- psb stands for Photoshop Large Document Format. This is a file type that stores large images that can't be saved in psd files.
Raster Editors
- Adobe Photoshop is a raster image editor that is used to create and edit raster files.
- Photopea is a raster image editor that is used to create and edit raster files. It is a free alternative to photoshop.
- Gimp is a raster image editor that is used to create and edit raster files. It is a free and open source alternative to photoshop.
- Procreate is a raster graphics editor for digital painting.
Vector
- Vector images are graphics that use lines and points and are typically used for logos, fonts, and illustrations.
- There are many different vector file formats like psd, ai, pdf, svg, coreldraw (cdr), indd, eps, adobe animate (fla)
- ai stands for Adobe Illustrator. This is the file type that results from exporting image files from illustrator and is used for creating digital and printed images like logos, posters, icons, etc.
- pdf stands for Portable Document Format. It is a file formats used to share documents.
- svg stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. It a file to create graphics for websites and applications
- indd stands for InDesign Documents. This is the file type that results from exporting image files from InDesign and is used for creating print and digital layouts.
- eps stand for Encapsulated PostScript. It is a file used for high-quality printing, graphic design.
- ait stands for Adobe Illustrator Template. It is a file format used for a template created using Adobe Illustrator.
Vector Image Editors
- Adobe Photoshop is a raster image editor but can also be used to create vector images and work with vectors.
- Adobe Illustrator is a vector image editor that is used to create digital and printed graphics such as logos, icons, and many other graphics using vectors.
- Adobe InDesign is a layout program that also has the ability to create and use vector images.
- Coreldraw is a program that could be used for illustrations and has the ability to make vectors illustrations/images.
- Adobe Animate is a programs that allows you to create animations with the ability to create vector images and use them in the animation.
Layout
- indd stands for InDesign Documents. This is the file type that results from exporting image files from InDesign and is used for creating print and digital layouts.
- idml stands for InDesign Markup Language. This is a file format for InDesign documents in XML format that can be used to store layout information.
Layout Editors
- Adobe InDesign is a layout program that is used to create digital layouts for things like books and posters and be used in digital or in print.
- Adobe Illustrator is a vector image editor that could also be used to create digital layouts for print.
